Hash...

I love Computer Graphics. You know CG, the stuff that makes the movie magic these days. Most animation packages are very expensive which makes them less likely to fall into the hands of us normal people. You know those of us that have delusions of grandeur about being an animator. Well there is a package on the market that is affordable and VERY powerful. It's called Animation:Master by a company named Hash, Inc. So if you're into modeling you may want to take a look at this wonderful piece of software.

But...

That's not really why I'm writing. I thought I'd introduce you all to Martin's Minutes by Martin Hash. He's a wonderful writer and his stories are definitely worth a read. He also appears to be quite the free thinker, which is a wonderful thing.

Check out the entry "MARTIN'S MINUTES - June 14, 2000 #305". I thought it was pretty amusing. ;-)

Enjoy.

Red light runners...

If you make a habit of running red lights then knock it off! I'm getting sick of watching cars zip through an intersection well after the light has changed red. It's a gut wrenching feeling. After my heart settles back into place I want to chase the person down and beat the living snot-bubbles out of them!

That brings me to this point. We NEED cameras at intersections. I'm in favor of them and I don't think they invade our privacy. Stores have cameras to prevent "shrinkage" of their inventories, that's a nice fancy word for theft. The City of Fresno has installed cameras at some problem intersections hopefully they'll work. People are strange creatures. It often takes hitting them in the pocket book before they'll learn not to do something. Fines should start off stiff and double each time you're caught in the act. If you do it more than once you should probably have your license revoked! Driving isn't a right, it's a privilege so treat it as such and obey the laws.

It's funny how willing we are to risk our lives, and the lives of others, just so we can get where we're going five minutes quicker.

The alarm went off at 5:20 this morning...

A good friend and I jog four days a week. We've been doing it for about a year now and I've really come to enjoy it. This morning was our first outing in about two and a half weeks. Ali took a vacation then came home and had to recover from his vacation so we had to get re-started sometime. After having that much time off you become accustomed to sleep. So this morning I had to drag myself outta bed! It was painful. But I'm glad I did. When I walked outside it was cool! You see here in the San Joaquin Valley we've had and extremely hot summer, I believe more that 30 days over 100 degrees. To walk out the door to a cool breeze was wonderful! That's not even the best part. Over these past two weeks the sun has decided it too should sleep in. So I was greeted by the dark. The moon was almost full, the sky was clear; you could see all the stars, and looking to the east you could see the silhouette of the Sierra Nevada in the moonlight.

What a way to start the day...

Ok, this is too weird!

Over on Scripting News Dave is posing the question "Is education the next revolution"? That's funny he's asking this because my wife and I have been discussing a project she'd like to do for the kids in her class. She started a new job this school year as a Teachers Assistant. She works part time with troubled teens for Exeter Public Schools. She's noticed that the kids are extremely bright and when they're focused on something they stay out of trouble! So we've been talking about, and she's researching, creating a web community the kids can own! This would include blogs for all the kids involved. It would be a place for them to vent, create, and just have a great time! It's creative, it's fun. I'm going to try to encourage Daved, who just so happens to be the head tech dude (A.K.A Director of Technology) for Exeter Public Schools, to purchase Manila for the school system. Get a community setup. It will benefit the kids and the teachers alike. Heck if he can't do it maybe we'll just purchase it and donate it to the school! I want to see this happen. I'll commit time to make it happen. Hopefully they'll let my wife get it off the ground. Once it's started you won't be able to slow it down!

Hey there fellow blogheads! :-)

A couple of friends and I (Richard and Daved) are looking for some CHEAP used equipment. A 1U rack mount, or multiple for the right price, that we could use for a new hosting service. With all the dot com busts out there I would think it would be fairly easy to find some used equipment. But eBay doesn't seem to have too much in the way of 1U servers! I've found a few but I'm interested in more options. Daved managed to score a pretty decent server out there a while back and now I'm in the market for a good deal myself!

Here's what I'm interested in...

  • Two PIII processors, at least 500 MHz. faster is better!

  • SCSI controller(s)

  • Two 9+ GIG drives

  • At least 256MB ram

  • CD and/or floppy drive would be nice

And I'd like to get this for around $600.00 US. Ya ya I know I'm cheap! :-) But this is for a fun project and I'm trying to keep costs down! So if you have something like that please contact me!

Now where'd I put that re-washed plastic dinnerware?

Yawn....

I really need some sleep. :-) I'm not as young as I used to be! Lately I've been hacking around on a set of C++ classes aimed squarely at the Blogger API. The biggest hurdle I'm running into now is the return values. I'm writing the code so it's portable, at least in theory, so I don't want to use anything that would make it harder to port. The return values are different depending on the method you've called so I'm trying to write a simple XML parsing class, or classes, to handle the results. It's well defined so the parsing should be straight forward, it's just going to take some work!

Last night I worked on an error class, until my battery died! Drat! Don't you hate it when you forget your power cord for your laptop! Anyway it's getting there slowly but surely. By the time I get this stinkin' thing finished the web will have changed again and it'll be useless code! :-)

I'd like to give special thanks to Dave Winer and Evan Williams. Both of these guys are at the front of what I see as the next evolution, not revolution, but evolution. That's good folks! The web is being opened up like a cheap bottle of wine for all to take a swig! This is how things get done, this is how it should be. Revolutions are often messy and painful but the evolution we're experiencing is exciting! There's a lot of interest in this API. It's being built real time! Evan is taking requests and building them! Simply Amazing! UserLand has opened up Manila to the same API, again simply amazing!

I really want to get this done and out for all to use. I'll keep going. Just plugging away one day at a time until it's finished. Hopefully I'll have something sooner rather than later. Richard is rewriting bloggerCOM right now to make use of this library and I'd like to see, at some point, others contribute to it.

Ahhh, I'm awake now...

Quick post...

I've been meaning to post this for quite a while now. I was inspired by the Talking Moose, who posted a picture of a Linux license plate a couple of weeks back. My wife has a really unusual license plate on her car. She wanted something to describe how she feels when I'm hacking around late nights and spending too much time with my computer. I've gotten in trouble a few times for my late night hacking activities! :-)

She has since dubbed herself a Hacker Widow, thus the plate! And by the way DO NOT deny this lady her mocha in the morning! Serious injury may result!

Now where'd I put those crutches?...

Happy Labor Day! :-)

It's amazing how empty downtown is this morning. I had my choice of spots in the parking structure and there's absolutely nobody on the streets! Weird. It's like something out of a Stephen King novel. You know where you wake up and find you're the only person on the face of the planet! :-)

We had an amazing time on Saturday night. It was my mother-in-laws 60th birthday party! The BIG SIX-OH! We rented half of a wonderful restaurant in downtown Visalia, Cafe 225. The food was wonderful and the company was fantastic. It's really nice when the family can get together and have a good time. If I can get my hands on some pictures I'll make sure to post them here.

My sister-in-law and her hubby came into town for the party. She informed me that I never say, or write, anything about her on my site. So this is just for you D.... Hi Dawn! Hi Michael, Dawn says you need to get a job. She hates the fact that you spend your days golfing and your honey-do lists! ;-) So if you're in the D.C. area and need a really smart and talented CFO for your fiber optics company, Michael is your man.

Some good reading for your Labor Day. Scobleizer and Talking Moose, two of my favorites.

So do you have your list of frequented sites like I do? I thought I'd share some of my all time favorites today.
