Visio News

The Visio 2002 SDK is available for download!

What’s In the Visio 2002 SDK?

The Visio 2002 SDK includes:

  • Microsoft Visio Code Librarian Samples - A library of 43 reusable Visual Basic functions, procedures, and classes ranging in topic from event handling to printing using the Visio Automation model. The Code Librarian sample library provides a “cut-and-paste” option for Visio developers as well as demonstrating how to use the object model. The Microsoft Code Librarian Viewer, which also ships with the SDK, makes it easy to browse and search through the samples library.

  • Sample applications - “Flowchart”, a Visual Basic sample that demonstrates how to extract data from an Excel spreadsheet, create a drawing in Visio, and publish to a Web page or to a Word drawing; simple C++ samples; XSLT sample demonstrating how to transform XML from a Visio drawing into HTML

  • Tools Development - Tools like Persistent Events and Event Monitor, libraries (Visio Primary Interop Assemblies as well as the Visio C++ typelib and helper libraries), and Visual Studio 6.0 wizards to set up new Visio add-ons and Component Object Model (COM) add-ins.

  • Documentation - Visio references, new articles, and Developing Microsoft Visio Solutions – one-stop shopping for Visio developer documentation.
Tech Rebublic: Use Visio to diagram your rack server equipment - Great article for your IT guy, or you if you ARE the IT guy.

Movie line of the week answer

Once again, no winners. For that matter we didn't even get ONE guess! DOH!

The answer is An American Werewolf in London. It's a great film that recently turned 20, man I'm getting old!

Assemblies in OPML?

RC has gone off the deep end! He's written a little hunk of code that'll generate an OPML file of the namespaces in your .NET Assembly! Given the OPML file we ran it through Prism to produce this, neeto.

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout

Scripting News: "Eventually this will yield a new kind of word processor, one that's custom-fitted to writing for the Web." - Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes..... The other day I was wondering aloud what the next big thing was going to be, this could be it. A whole new breed of "word processors" built just for bloggers. Oh... the thought just makes me all warm and tingly inside! Any VC's out there want to part with a small amount of cash? Kid with ideas wants to know!

Larry Staton: "Yes, piracy is bad. The solution is to take out the pirates." - I couldn't agree more.

End of the day reads

Financial Times: "Sun blinded by paranoia" - Can't we all just get along? Tell ya what! Microsoft should license Java and ship it with NT(A.K.A Windows XP) and Sun can license NT and port it to their boxes, ya that's the ticket. Thanks go Mr. Paul Wolpe. Paul doesn't have a blog , but it's on his list of things to do; right along with learning to juggle and climbing Everest!

Greeley Tribune: "Team picks white man mascot to make point" - Oh boy is this going to backfire! I think it's super funny, and I want one of their shirts! Where do I sign up.

Here's an XML-RPC based spell checker, sweet! [via RC]

Good mornin' y'all!

I've been busy, real busy, with my day job so I haven't had time to work on my new side project. Hey that's the way the ball bounces sometimes!

New Nokia phones, now with Java!

The new Nokia phones look pretty darned sweet if you ask me. Looks like Sun's Java may finally be paying off in the consumer devices category. [via SlashDot]

RC a.k.a Mr. Strongly Typed

Richard Caetano, or Mr. Strongly Typed as his friends call him, has managed to put together a nice little series on .NET, C# and VB.NET. The series deals with the struggles his company have gone through trying to make a decision about the future of their product. Should they use C# or VB.NET? It looks like VB.NET has been declared the winner because it's the most familiar language to all developers involved, that seems reasonable. Keep up the good work RC, we're waiting on that third installment!

Arthur Andersen on Slate

It's been a VERY long time since I've read anything on Slate. Here's a nice little article on Arthur Andersen. Can I have a shredder with that please?

Don't ya hate it when...

Don't you just hate it when you make a change to a .H file and you have to rebuild the world? It does have some benefits however, I can get coffee and surf the net while it builds!

Uhhhhh, thanks?

Bill Lazar in response to my Lotus Agenda post this morning[via e-mail]: "I never used it, LOL." - Gee thanks Bill.

Dvorak

I don't often agree with John C. Dvorak, and I'm not starting now. That said he raises some interesting questions about Linux in the latest news stand issue of PC Magazine. In his article "Is Linux Your Next OS?" he makes five points that he believes would put Linux on the desktop map. Funny thing is the Macintosh answers most of the points today; with the exception of point #4, read it and you'll see what I mean.

Jockeying for position

This whole authentication nightmare is going to take so many years to flesh out. I'd say at least ten. In the meantime you're still going to have to keep track of a password for each and every site you visit. Gak!

So is it just me?

Is it just me or is the whole software/hardware industry so wacko these days you can't see the next big thing? It seems like ever since the whole dot bomb fiasco things just got screwy. I still hear talk from people about the desktop being dead, huh? I'm sitting in front of a PC typing this entry and I just cannot see them going away. Maybe that's just lack of vision? I can however see the PC transforming into something different, like the Tablet PC. My wife saw a demo of one and now she can't wait to have one, who can blame her?

Question o' the day

A question for the two folks that read this site. How many of you still use Lotus Agenda on a daily basis? If you do, why do you still use it? Please send your answers here. NOTE: I will not share your e-mail address with anyone. Thanks!

Star Wars

Did anyone catch the new Star Wars trailer last night on Fox? WOW! This movie is going to kick some major butt. I think I'm going to have to pay the matinee price for Ice Age JUST so I can see the trailer on the big screen. From what I saw last night the battle scenes are incredible! Mark your calendars, the fun starts May 16th.

NOTE: You'll need to sign up to see the trailer.

Sun v. Microsoft

Cool! Larry chimed in, and wrote this and this about the whole Microsoft/Sun mess. Thanks Larry!

News.com: "Experts: Sun lawsuit reaches too far" - I certainly think so, but I guess I'm biased.

Chris Pirillo: "I've never had a problem running any Java applet worth running within Internet Explorer on Windows XP." - WARNING: Chris uses some real choice words to get his point across. Nice language there Chris, ouch! Fourth paragraph down

Unfortunately this probably isn't going to end for quite a while. In the meantime I guess we'll just keep plugging away on our respective products trying to make the best darned software we can.
