The Scobleizer LonghornBlog: "How to hate Microsoft." - I'd like to say thanks for introducing me to Zane Thomas, I'll be monitoring him closely.
Read the comments section. Zane makes some very good points. Microsoft has, by and large, become like car companies. To get us to buy the next thing, be it OS or Office productivity suite, they must make it look different. I know, I know, that sounds bad but it's true. That said I'll probably be purchasing Longhorn just like every other greenhorn on the planet because it's the latest greatest offering. I miss being on the inside of Microsoft only because I miss seeing the next generation stuff, and contributing to it.
One thing about OS features. Security is NOT a feature, it's a MUST. Business cannot be expected to deal with viruses running rampant on their networks. We had this situation yesterday at work, it took the network down for a couple of hours. Turns out someone had burned their machine down and started with a fresh OS install. That fresh OS was infected VERY quickly and started banging the network with traffic, which lead to it going down. Once the IS team traced it down it was easy to fix, but the fact that it happened is the problem.
I'm not saying this because I hate Microsoft. I'm saying it because it happened, and I want to see it stop happening. I'm a big believer in NT, yes that means XP/Win2k/Win2k3. The Kernel is SOLID, but the layers that live on top need shoring up. It's a big job and all this turmoil will make NT a better OS.
I hope, for Microsoft's sake, Longhorn is a rock.

[10:14 AM]
Ok so today is movie line day, and I've been summoned for jury duty. I reported this morning and they said to call back at 11:00AM to see if I need to serve. I decided to drop by Vantage to see a friend, and kill off the next thirty minutes.
Here it is, thanks for the idea Kevin.
What I suggest is you go to an execution, and see a man be killed. You watch him die, and you watch him beg!
Ok, quick, what movie! Send your guesses
here.
Hey, that's a good idea

Scripting News: "I find that I want Netflix to just upload the movies to my DVR." - Could Dave have the answer to the Video on demand promise? I'd certainly be VERY interested in TiVO, or another PVR, if I could have content flow to the box on demand! Blockbuster or Netflix should seriously consider looking into this idea.

Baseline: "The most powerful piece of software inside Microsoft may be the $40 application from a tiny vendor called Userland that Robert Scoble uses to write his weblog." - Go Scoble, you pot-stirrer man.
More on iTunes

[8:47 AM]
Like most things, your mileage may vary [via Scoble]. My first experience with iTunes was fabulous. Sure it's not a "standard" windows application but I wouldn't expect it to be. It's a port of a Mac app, and a first attempt at that. I think they did a great job. Over time they will hopefully adapt it to do things like a Windows app should. Hey, anyone remember Word 6.0 for the Mac (I think it was 6.0 that was sooooo bad?).
Laptop update, a compromise.

I've been thinking about purchasing a laptop for quite sometime, and asked for help in deciding what to purchase. I was pretty sure I was going to get a desktop replacement because I'll be using it to write software and I want my C++ compiler to build bits really, really fast. But I was also interested in purchasing a laptop for my wife so she could do her thing during my "off hours", while I'm at work basically. So this weekend we decided to pick up an HP Pavilion zd7010us Widescreen laptop. It's plenty quick and has a big enough drive and enough ram to satisfy my requirements and it'll serve the family well.
